The Power of Perception: The Study of a Person’s Perceived Belongingness and its Effect on Campus Involvement

Kaia Gaylets, Azriel Hinman, Grace Koloras

Abstract: The question this research is aimed at answering is how a person’s perception of their belonging within the community relates to their campus involvement. Belongingness has been shown to correlate with campus involvement. These variables have not, however, been studied with regards to causality. Campus involvement in this study can be generalized to include clubs, sports, work studies, peer connections, and campus events. This study would be conducted on Muhlenberg College students in their sophomore year for phase 1 and the same students in their senior year during phase 2. This is a longitudinal study to compare belongingness and campus involvement during time 1 and time 2. We hypothesize that belongingness predicts campus involvement.
